Continuing a commitment to lead by example, the White House released Federal Agency Strategic Sustainability Performance Plans on September 9, 2010, which work to achieve the environmental, economic and energy goals called for in the Executive Order on Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance (Executive Order 13514) signed by President Obama on October 5, 2009.

Under the Executive Order, Federal agencies were asked to develop, implement and annually update a plan that prioritizes actions based on a positive return on investment for the American taxpayer and to meet energy, water, and waste reduction targets.
